Studies of Arms and Feet

Black pencil on paper Mark P. Borel

(Lugt no. 4824)

33 x 22 cm

This study of arms and feet in black pencil was created for one of the two paintings representing the Baptism installed in the parish church of Saint-Héand (Loire) and in the Saint-Irénée church of Lyon (Rhône). Indeed, the arm holding a sword in such a particular manner allows us to connect this drawing to the preparatory studies for these two canvases.

Paul Borel spent a large part of his life painting for churches and convents in the Lyon region. He delivered decorations in two phases for the basilica of Ars sur Formans (Cycle of the martyrdom of Saint Philomena (1867) and a series of four marouflaged canvases on the life of the Curé of Ars (around 1900).

His aspiration to religious life with the Dominicans not having been fulfilled, he remained very close to the order, cultivating friendships with several members of the Order and offering a chapel that he decorated for their teaching institution in Oullins (Rhône), to this day his most complete artistic achievement in terms of religious painting.
