First Impression: Four Centuries on Paper is a thoughtfully selected presentation introducing our gallery to the public through a selection of works spanning the 17th through 20th centuries. The exhibition demonstrates the remarkable evolution of artistic expression on paper—from intimate preliminary studies to ambitious finished compositions where paper became the artist's medium of choice.
This exhibition features works including a 17th century luminous coastal landscape attributed to Cornelis von Poelenburch, a charming 18th century study of a man by Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, an abstract watercolor by Henri-Edmond Cross, and a modern preparatory study of a room by Edward Hopper. This thoughtful selection will also include works by Stefano Della Bella, Claude-Henri Watelet, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Franz Kline and many more artists that illustrate not only the technical mastery of each period but also the shifting relationship between artist and paper across four centuries of creative practice.
As an emerging gallery, this exhibition marks the public's first impression of Agar Marteau Fine Art—an introduction to our goal of bringing a modern perspective to the art market. We are thrilled to participate in the 20th anniversary of Master Drawings New York and deeply honored to exhibit at Van de Weghe gallery on 64 E 77th Street, New York.
