Toshio Bando Japanese, 1895-1973
22.5 x 28 cm
This still life painting belongs to Toshio Bando's documented "Serin mort" series and demonstrates the artist's characteristic approach to intimate subject matter. The work depicts a dead yellow canary against a neutral gray background, painted with Bando's typical attention to subtle color gradations and precise form. The composition includes a red thread or tag attached to the bird, creating a focal point of color against the otherwise muted palette.
Toshio Bando was a Japanese artist who settled permanently in Paris in 1922, becoming one of the few Japanese painters of the School of Paris to build his entire career in France. He studied under the mentorship of Tsuguharu Foujita and exhibited at major Parisian salons including the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Indépendants. Bando maintained a consistent artistic style throughout his fifty-year career, focusing on quiet domestic scenes, portraits, and still lifes. His work is held in private collections and museums, and he remained active until his death in 1973. This painting exemplifies his restrained technique and preference for contemplative subjects drawn from everyday life.
